To find the occurrence of any word, simply type the word in this box, then click the
"Search" button, and HyperSearch‚Ñ¢ will get you a list of where it found cards that contained that word.
If you wanted to search for topics related to the Macintosh‚Ñ¢ , for example, you could type in "macintosh".
OR's
---
Of course, there are people who refer to it simply as Mac. In that case, you really want to search for "macintosh" OR "mac", so that HyperSearch finds either one. "OR"'s are implied by separating the words to search for with a comma. So you could type in the "Search For" box, "macintosh, mac".
BEGINS WITH...
-----------
HyperSearch is even better yet. After all, you would not want to skip references to MacII‚Ñ¢ or MacSE‚Ñ¢ . We could add this to our comma separated list, but this could get tiresome after awhile. That's why HyperSearch provides "Begins With..." searching.
To indicate that you want to find everything that begins with a letter (or set of letters), simply type in the beginning letter(s) then one or more periods. So you could now type in "mac.." to find all the cards that contain any word beginning with "mac".
(This will undoubtedly produce more words than just Macintosh. To narrow your search down, see also the "And" and "But Not" operators.)

SEARCH
Clicking this button will set HyperSearch‚Ñ¢ in action. Depending on what search conditions you typed into the dialog box, HyperSearch will return to you in one of two ways.
If you entered a valid search condition, HyperSearch will display the number of cards found containing that particular condition. Notice that the "Find First" button is now also enabled.
You can then decide if the number of cards is too large for you to start browsing through. If it is, redefine your search condition and click the Search button again.
Otherwise, you can decide to start browsing through the list of cards found. Clicking the "Find First" button will take down the HyperSearch dialog box and take you to the first card on the list.

AND
The "AND" operator allows you to be more specific about what you want to search for. It has a slightly different meaning than the implied "OR" operator in that it causes HyperSearch‚Ñ¢ to search for the word(s) in the first line of the Dialog Box AND also the word(s) found in this line of the Dialog Box.
Adding to the previous example (click the
"Search For" button), you could now search for information related to the Macintosh, but focus more specifically on what Discovery Systems has to do with it. You could then have a search condition which looks something like,
Search For: mac..
And Discovery
HyperSearch would then find all the cards in its index that contain a word beginning with
"mac" and the word "Discovery".

BUT NOT
This operator allows you to further narrow down your search condition. Word(s) typed into this line of the Dialog Box will be excluded from the answer list that HyperSearch‚Ñ¢ returns.
For example, if you had entered the search for information related to Discovery Systems and the Macintosh‚Ñ¢ (click the "AND" button), HyperSearch might have notified you that 75 cards were found to match this condition. A quick browse through some of these cards reveals a lot of cards are specifically related to CAD programs; however, you are interested in the desktop publishing side of the industry. In order to eliminate these unwanted answers, you might type in something like,
Search For mac..
And Discovery
And
But Not CAD..
Now HyperSearch finds only 25 cards that match all these conditions -- a much more manageable number of cards to browse through.

FIND FIRST
After you have clicked the "Search" button
(and assuming HyperSearch‚Ñ¢ has returned to you an answer) you can begin browsing through the cards found to match your search condition by clicking the "Find First" button.
This Dialog Box will disappear and HyperSearch will take you to the first card of the answer list it has retrieved for you. Once there, you will notice "Find" buttons to enable to you step forward and backward through the cards.

CANCEL
Of course you can always change your mind about starting a new search with HyperSearch‚Ñ¢. Simply click the "Cancel" button and your previous (if any) search will still be in place.

AND NOT
Finally, you can use the "And Not" operator to further exclude possible answers from an answer set returned to you by HyperSearch‚Ñ¢. It is similar to the previous "But Not" operator.

AND (again)
An additional set of "And" conditions can be used to make your search even more specific. It adds to the list of things that HyperSearch‚Ñ¢ will use to determine if a given card in its index matches the current search condition.
In our example, we are now telling HyperSearch to find all occurrences of the word "mac" and also the word "discovery" AND ALSO a word that begins with "publish"
